Load limiter
Above a certain level of impact force,
this mechanism is used to limit the force
of the belt against the body so that it is
at an acceptable level.
METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (2/5)
Each air bag system consists of:
– an air bag and gas generator fitted
on the steering wheel for the driver
and in the dashboard for the front
passenger;

a shared electronic unit which in -
cludes the impact detector and a
monitoring system which controls
the ignition module for the gas gen-
erator;

a single
å tell-tale light on the
instrument panel.
Air bags for driver and front
passenger
An air bag may be provided for both the
driver and the front passenger.
The presence of this equipment is in-
dicated by the word “Air bag” on the
steering wheel and dashboard and, de-
pending on the vehicle, a label on the
lower part of the windscreen.
The air bag system uses
pyrotechnic principles. This
explains why, when the air
bag inflates, it will gener-
ate heat, produce smoke (this does
not mean that a fire is about to start)
and make a noise upon detonation.
In a situation where an air bag is
required, it will inflate immediately
and this may cause some minor, su-
perficial grazing to the skin or other
problems.

Depending on the vehicle, the passen-
ger air bag system is linked to a front
passenger air bag deactivation warn-
ing

light 2 on the instrument panel. This
warning light is linked to the passenger
air bag deactivation system using the
ignition key.
It lights up to indicate that the passen-
ger air bag will not inflate in the event
of an impact (refer to the information
on “Front passenger air bag deactiva-
tion”).
Operating faults
W

arning light 1 will light up on the in-
strument panel when the ignition is
turned on and then go out after a few
seconds.
If it does not light up when the ignition
is switched on or if it flashes, there is a
fault in the system.
Contact your approved dealer as soon
as possible. Your protection will be re-
duced until this fault is rectified.
Driver and passenger air
bags (continued)
Operation
This system is only operational when
the ignition is switched on.
In a severe frontal impact, the air bags
inflate rapidly, cushioning the impact
of the driver’s head and chest against
the steering wheel and of the front pas-
senger against the dashboard. The air
bags then deflate immediately so that
the passengers are not in any way hin-
dered from leaving the vehicle.

CHILD SAFETY : deactivating/activating the front passenger air bag (1/2)
Deactivating the front
passenger air bags
(on equipped vehicles)
In order to be able to install a rear-
facing child seat on the front passen-
ger seat you must deactivate the front
passenger seat belt additional restraint
systems. To deactivate the air bags:
with the
vehicle stationary and the ignition off,
insert

the ignition key in lock 1 and turn
to the OFF position.
With the ignition on, you must check
t

hat warning light 2
ã is lit up on
the instrument panel.
This warning light remains continu-
ously lit to let you know that you can
fit a child seat.
DANGER
Since front passenger air
bag triggering and the po-
sition of a rear-facing child
seat are incompatible, it is not per-
mitted to fit such a seat in this posi-
tion unless the vehicle is fitted with
an air bag deactivation device. The
child may suffer very serious injuries
if the air bag inflates.
The label (on the dashboard) and
the markings (on the sun visor)
remind you of these instructions.

indicates that it is essential
to stop immediately (as soon as traf-
fic conditions allow). Ensure that the

ble. You risk damaging your vehicle
If you keep driving after this warning
light has come on.
The û warning light

mediately, for your own
safety, as soon as traffic conditions
allow. Switch off the engine and do
not restart it. Contact an approved
Dealer.

LLow fuel level warning light
This goes out as soon as the engine
starts. If it lights up or remains lit, fill up
with fuel as soon as possible. There is
only approximately 30 miles (50 km)
worth of fuel left after the warning light
first comes on.
åAir bag warning light
This lights up when the igni-
tion is switched on and goes out after
a few seconds. If it does not come on
when the ignition is switched on or if it
flashes, there is a fault in the system.
